I’m taking an ecological class at the university and we have many discussions in the class about sustainability. What I have really found interesting is that sustainability seems to be about choices and perspectives within a system that flows so natural. We decide how we move within that system. What each member within my family decides to value is how we link to our community, and it all starts within our home; within ourselves. We make internal choices that includes us into an environment and community.
I consider the families I spent time with in Peru and our lives are quite different externally, but we sustain ourselves, our families and our communities much the same. With our without the same external resources – quality of life has been proven to me to come from the inside of each of us; the quality and well being of our decisions, thus influencing our environment and community.
Below are some thoughts I quickly tried to capture while I was in the moment. It’s just some thoughts put together as I open my eyes to further perspectives about being human. Blessings to you all. Please let me know your comments because we can learn so much for each others stories and perceptions to being.

Sustainability requires so much more than our physical environment. It is the quality of what we sustain, and this starts with the value of our decisions. Our population can live longer from spare parts and medicinal miracles but how we function and feel inside will be the foundation to sustain ourselves within our environment. We must remember the environment is the natural flowing system and we have been gifted with decision to function within it. The ecological systems may outlast our physical lives but this is when we remember our biological system of generations – it is not about our one being but those that came before and those that have yet to come.
When we feed off pain and discontentment, we nurture the dissection of culture, values and tradition that sustain our generations footprints within the ecological system. Without culture, values and tradition, we are slowly evolving into robotic clones that will require external stimuli to keep us alive and no longer feeding into our ecological surroundings. We separate from the spirit of growth and thus, sustainability.
Sustainability is connecting with the fundamentals of our source and the linkages to our communities. Our communities are existing because of the environment in which we become a part of. When we look internally and become one with our being, we begin to recognize the choices we create for ourselves and our ecological and biological footprint can be appreciated and shared throughout the generations.
Sustainability starts with ourselves and source and it will automatically be drawn to community. Quality not quantity is what sustains us. Honor, strength and appreciation is our tools and reward. And only this can be found within ourselves and each other. It is our lack of personal luster that will will eventually weaken our base for other generations to survive. For us humans, it is the generations that function in the ecological environment; individually we wouldn’t survive to sustain our being for long.
If we want strong generations and to live a healthy life, we need to nurture the quality of our choices and empower others to nurture theirs. We are all community. We all will benefit from this sustainable shift. Capture the strength and release it for others. To fully own something is to give it away. This is the foundation to sustainable living.
Our external resources are simply the choices along the way.
